Community Alert Network

Our community is a relatively safe place to live, but a serious incident affecting health and safety can happen anywhere at anytime. It could be manmade such as a fire or chemical spill, or a natural occurrence like a tornado or other severe weather condition.

In any instance, CAN will provide the necessary warning information to as many residents as possible, as quickly as possible, via phone.

The system, when activated by a public emergency authority, automatically phones all homes and businesses in the affected area with a specific warning and/or basic instructions. The message is delivered as simply and clearly as possible. All calls are generated, tracked and backed up by a sophisticated database computer system to ensure every number is called - more than once if necessary.

Most importantly, for CAN to work at maximum effectiveness, the contact database needs to be current. If your correct phone number is listed, you'll be called. The call will relay a warning message recorded by a public safety authority, telling you what the problem is and what advice you should follow.  You may be asked to:

  • Go indoors and stay there.
  • Do not collect children from school or other activities as they will be following the Shelter-In-Place protocol.
  • Close all outside doors and every door inside the building.
  • Close all windows.
  • Seal the cracks around doorways with wide tape and a rolled damp towel at the floor space.
  • Tape a piece of plastic over the window to seal it.
  • Do not use the bathroom or kitchen vents.
  • Set thermostats so air conditioners, furnaces and hot water heaters will not come on.
  • Do not use fireplaces. Close all dampers.
  • Do not operate clothes dryer.
  • Shelter in an inside room away from windows and doors if possible.
  • Stay tuned to local radio AM570, AM1090, FM96.7, FM105.3 or TV CKCO for information.
  • Do not leave the building until told to do so.
  • Do not use the phone; you may tie up phone lines.
