June Is Recreation and Parks Month 2026

June is officially recognized as Recreation and Parks Month (JRPM), a nationwide celebration highlighting the vital role that parks, recreation programs, trails, green spaces, and community facilities play in supporting healthy, active, and connected communities. Across Canada, municipalities and organizations are encouraging residents to get outside, stay active, and enjoy local recreation opportunities throughout the month.

This year's JRPM theme, “Every Journey Belongs,” emphasizes the importance of creating welcoming and inclusive spaces where people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can connect, learn, and thrive. Communities across Ontario are marking the occasion with free activities, special events, fitness programs, outdoor recreation opportunities, and family-friendly celebrations.

“Parks and recreation spaces are essential to community well-being,” said organizers of JRPM. “They support physical and mental health, foster social connections, and provide opportunities for people to enjoy nature and active living close to home.”

Residents are encouraged to participate in local events, explore neighbourhood parks and trails, try a new recreational activity, and celebrate the positive impact recreation and parks have on quality of life throughout June.

About JRPM

June Is Recreation and Parks Month is supported by Canadian Parks and Recreation Association and, in Ontario, by Parks and Recreation Ontario. The annual initiative promotes the physical, social, environmental, and economic benefits of recreation and parks in communities across Canada.
