Starting a Business

Are you planning to start a home occupation, hairdressing/personal service business, teaching operation, clinic, or home business (tradesperson) from your property?

Prior to establishing any of these uses, a Zoning Compliance Certificate must be obtained to confirm compliance with the Township of Woolwich Zoning By-law. Information regarding the application requirements and the necessary forms can be found on the Township's Development Application Forms page.

The regulations governing these uses are contained within Sections 4.23 and 4.24 of the Township of Woolwich Zoning By-law. Please refer to the applicable section for the complete and current permissions, restrictions, and operational requirements.

Home Occupation / Home Based Business

A home occupation (home-based business) allows a resident to operate a business from their home or a permitted accessory building, subject to the requirements of the Township's Zoning By-law.

The specific permissions, regulations, and restrictions for home occupations are set out in Section 4.24 – Home Occupations of the Zoning By-law. Please refer to that section for the most up-to-date requirements.

Proposed Teaching Operation / Clinics

A teaching operation or clinic is a use conducted from a property for the purpose of providing instructional, educational, therapeutic, health, wellness, or similar services, in accordance with the Township's Zoning By-law.

Hairdressing/Personal Service

A hairdressing or personal service use is a business that provides personal care, grooming, aesthetic, wellness, or similar services from a property in accordance with the Township's Zoning By-law.

Home Business - Tradesperson

A Home Business - Tradesperson is a business operated by a tradesperson from a permitted residential dwelling and/or accessory building on a property zoned Agricultural (A). This use is intended to accommodate certain trade-related businesses and small-scale manufacturing activities that remain secondary to the residential use of the property.

Agricultural, Industrial and / or Commercial Zoned Lands

Zoning Compliance Certificates are also required for businesses operating from Agricultural zoned properties (i.e. farm produce stands, greenhouses, on-farm businesses) and all Industrial and Commercial operations within the Township.
